Kitesurfing on the Island of Crete

Kitesurfing is a popular activity on Crete, offering excellent conditions for both beginners and experienced riders. The island’s windy coastline makes it an ideal destination for this water sport. I most often meet kite surfers at the end of autumn as windy weather sets in and the beaches are empty of tourists.

Where to Kitesurf?
Crete has several spots suitable for kitesurfing. The most well-known locations are Elafonisi, Kouremenos Beach near Sitia, and Chrissi Akti near Chania. These beaches are known for their steady winds and open spaces, providing a safe environment for kitesurfers. But I took these photos on the beach of Rethymno, Crete. Next to the port there is a sandy beach with no underwater rocks, which makes it ideal for kitesurfing.
