March 25: A Double Celebration in Greece

Today, March 25, Greece celebrates a significant double holiday: Independence Day and the Orthodox feast of the Annunciation. This day holds deep historical and religious importance for Greeks worldwide, blending national pride with spiritual devotion.

Greek Independence Day** marks the beginning of the revolution against Ottoman rule in 1821. It symbolizes the fight for freedom and the establishment of the modern Greek state. Across the country, parades, ceremonies, and cultural events take place, honoring the heroes who fought for independence.

At the same time, the Orthodox Christian world observes the **Feast of the Annunciation**. According to Christian tradition, this is the day when the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, announcing that she would give birth to Jesus Christ. This joyful occasion is celebrated with church services and family gatherings.

The combination of these two celebrations makes March 25 a unique and vibrant day in Greece. Streets are filled with blue and white flags, schoolchildren and military units participate in parades, and churches hold special liturgies. It is a time for both national reflection and religious observance.

To capture the spirit of this special day, I have taken a series of portrait photographs that showcase the emotions and traditions of the people celebrating. I invite you to take a look and immerse yourself in the beauty and significance of March 25 in Greece!
