My trip to Crete in november 2024

My journey began at the serene Holy Trinity (Agia Triada) Tzagaroli Monastery, a treasure nestled near Chania, Crete. This beautiful monastery, rich in history and architectural beauty, offers a peaceful atmosphere that immediately transports visitors back in time. As I stepped through the gates, I felt a deep sense of tranquility and awe.

A highlight of my visit was exploring the monastery's shop and tasting room, located conveniently to the left of the main entrance. Here, visitors can sample and purchase exquisite local products such as olive oil and wine made by the monks, adding a unique touch of Crete’s heritage to the experience. This tasting room also features a museum, offering an immersive look into the monastery’s rich past. Don’t miss this gem if you’re ever in the area!

Continuing my journey, I passed by the Gouverneto Monastery, (map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/JPcv37dPyo2w59Cs7 )

another significant stop near Chania. Known as one of Crete’s oldest monasteries, this sacred site stands proudly against a dramatic landscape and boasts an impressive stone façade that catches the eye even from a distance.

Although I chose not to enter due to the monastery’s prohibition on photography, the exterior alone was captivating. It's a reminder of the profound reverence and traditions that many historic sites uphold to maintain their sacred atmosphere. While I was unable to capture its beauty on camera, the memory remains vivid in my mind—an experience of quiet reflection amidst Crete's rugged beauty.

My next destination led me to the Arkoudospilio Cave, (map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/QHq1UdXeahLiBsB5A )

an intriguing spot nestled along the rugged Cretan landscape. This cave, whose name translates to “Bear Cave,” is steeped in legend and mystery. According to local folklore, the cave is named after a stalagmite resembling a bear, believed to have been transformed by divine intervention.

As I ventured inside, I could feel a distinct shift in atmosphere—cooler air and a palpable sense of history greeted me. This natural wonder has served as a place of worship and a shelter throughout centuries, making it more than just a geological formation; it’s a living testament to Crete's rich cultural and spiritual tapestry.

After leaving Arkoudospilio Cave, I continued my journey to the Monastery Katholiko, (map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/maqwa1R6aBbEY5ji7 )

an awe-inspiring site often considered Crete’s oldest monastery. Hidden in a rugged and remote gorge, the walk to Katholiko is an adventure in itself, with breathtaking views of rocky cliffs and lush greenery guiding the path.

Reaching the ruins of this ancient monastery felt like stepping back in time. The complex, believed to date back to the 6th century, features stone archways, caves used by hermits, and remains of structures that once bustled with life and devotion. The monastery's blend of history and natural beauty is humbling, evoking a deep respect for those who lived and worshipped here amid challenging terrain.

After exploring the ancient sites and breathtaking landscapes of northern Crete, I made my way across the island to the charming town of Palaiochora. (map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/AckrK4My1vi1uN8k7 )

Nestled on the southwestern coast, this picturesque spot is a perfect place to unwind and reflect after a day filled with history and adventure.

Palaiochora’s relaxed atmosphere and coastal beauty quickly made me feel at ease. Surrounded by golden beaches and the crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea, the town offers a delightful mix of local tavernas, narrow streets, and warm hospitality. As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink, I felt grateful to end my day in such a serene setting.

The next morning, my journey continued along a stunning stretch of the E4 European long-distance hiking trail on Crete, starting at Krios Beach.  (map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/D5CAC9mzVGJjwZhC8 )

Known for its remote beauty, Krios Beach offers a tranquil beginning to this hike, with its mix of coarse sand and smooth pebbles bordered by rugged cliffs and azure waters. Breathing in the salty sea air as I set off felt invigorating, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. The trail weaves its way through some of Crete’s most captivating landscapes, leading me toward the remarkable Kedrodasos Beach. ( map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/XmmT9vt6zHN6NDE27 )

Along the way, I was treated to sweeping coastal views, fragrant juniper trees, and rocky paths that demanded both focus and appreciation. The journey itself was as rewarding as reaching the destination.

Arriving at Kedrodasos Beach was like discovering a hidden paradise. Its soft white sand, dunes, and scattered cedar trees create a unique atmosphere unlike anywhere else on the island. With the shimmering waters of the Libyan Sea lapping at the shore, Kedrodasos feels wonderfully untouched—a quiet haven that rewards those willing to make the trek.

As I relaxed on the sands of Kedrodasos Beach, listening to the gentle waves and feeling the cool sea breeze, I reflected on the incredible journey that had brought me to this point. From exploring ancient monasteries and hidden caves to crossing rugged trails and coastal landscapes, every step revealed a different facet of Crete’s diverse beauty and deep history.

This adventure wasn't just about seeing places—it was about connecting with the island's spirit, feeling its timeless rhythms, and appreciating both the grand and simple moments along the way. As I packed up to leave the beach, I knew that Crete still held countless treasures waiting to be discovered. And so, with a heart full of memories and a soul ready for more, I looked forward to wherever the next path would lead me on this enchanting island.

Imbros Gorge

Today I had a walk with friends along the Imbros gorge. The gorge is suitable for those who can survive the fact that there is no stream running along the road; I prefer the gorges of Mili, Samaria, Patsos. It's good that the company was pleasant.
